It has the same awesome Joey Bunz absorbency of the pocket diapers, but the whole diaper is absorbent. A fitted and cover also make for a great defense against explosive diapers! Pockets- you can get cheap ones off of ebay, alvababy/ coolababy are two that I like. Less than $7 a piece with insert and have got diapers for about 3.50 w/ insert free shipping.
As mentioned, if you use a pocket diaper as a prefold then it could absorb some of the liquid if the prefold gets soaked. Plus the cost of buying would much cheaper to get covers for prefolds than to buy pocket diapers plus prefolds, or even just buying pocket diapers that come with inserts.

Feb 10, 2013 - For the longest time we were able to get away with just one insert in a pocket diaper and remain leak free. Then my son became a toddler who started drinking a lot more liquids

Nov 08, 2011·I dealt with cloth diapers and I dont think I like either. I just rather fold them myself as it is easier to wash them. at least for me. its hard to wash between layers in prefold and inserts seem pointless because you have to wash the whole thing anyway.

That being said, I use pocket diapers and love them. When my DD (dear daughter) was first born we used prefolds with a Thirsties cover. That worked great and I loved it.
Prefold cons: need to learn to fold them (there are youtube videos that are great tutorials), if you trifold them the poop will likely get on the cover so you will need lots of covers if you trifold with a younger baby, some say take longer to dry than the inserts on a pocket diaper (if you use a hemp insert though, may not be the case), I would say they stain easily but I don't care about ...
